Adding Luxury to Your Home

There are many ways to add luxury to a home, but a key to adding luxury is adding uniqueness.

One of the reasons an item becomes luxurious or valuable is because of the rarity of it, and this is something that we take into consideration at Smith Brothers Construction.

Although there are many ways that one adds luxury to a home, here are just a few that are important to consider:

Things to Consider When Adding Luxury to Your Home:

Natural Stone

Natural stone can add a luxuriousness to your bathroom, kitchen, furniture, fireplace, flooring, and more. Because natural stone is, well, natural, and not man-made, no two pieces are alike. This uniqueness increases not only the design caliber, but the luxury of the home.

Materials like marble, onyx, travertine, limestone, and soapstone all have interesting features and can be used in many different ways. They are also timeless in their beauty and, if maintained, can increase the value of your home.

Fun fact – onyx can be backlit due to its light opacity, and can create a truly mesmerizing focal point as they will glow in a darkened room.

The Front Door

The door and its entryway can speak wonders about the quality of a home before your guests even walk through the door. The front door is not something to quickly pass by in the remodeling process. There are many details that one should consider when thinking through their front door such as size, material, color, and style. An oversized, individual door can help make a grand entrance.

A door with a fun accent color speaks to a lively and inviting environment. A glass door will add a hip and modern-feel to your entryway. Lastly, a solid wood door with ornate detailing will add a distinguished and formal appeal to your home.

Make the front door a one-of-a-kind art piece that reflects the style of your home and the feelings you’d want your guests to embody.

Hiding Outlets

The look and placement of an electrical outlet can ruin a beautiful kitchen backsplash and cause electrical cords to go unnaturally across floors and countertops. Planned placement and the overall look and color of an outlet can help avoid these unfortunate design mistakes.

For kitchens and bathrooms, placing outlets on the bottom of cabinets, in drawers, under countertops, or in corners can help draw attention away from the outlet, and put the focus on the beautiful backsplash or a striking range hood. If, for whatever reason, outlets do need to be placed on a backsplash, matching the color of the outlet to the backsplash color is the best choice to make.

For all other rooms, like family rooms or offices, planned placement of floor outlets is ideal. Often, furniture is placed away from walls, but when it comes to plugging in a side table lamp, this can cause an issue with cords running across the floor to reach a wall outlet. Place outlets in the floor to avoid this issue, ideally under furniture so that they are unseen.

Windows

While accent lighting can definitely add style and luxury to a home, there is nothing better than natural light. Filling a home with natural light creates an inviting environment free from the harshness of artificial light. This means that windows are of the utmost importance when creating a truly luxurious home.

Floor-to-ceiling windows can give panoramic views of nature or landscaping, and in this way, makes a home even more one-of-a-kind, as nothing is more unique than nature itself. Consider carefully the best way to dress windows, or if they should even be dressed at all. While drapery can add warmth and texture to a home, sometimes motorized shades would be best to truly honor the view.

When thinking through how to add luxury to a home, we would recommend speaking with one of our designers, as they are equipped with the knowledge and expertise to truly create a one-of-a-kind home for you, and can think through all the details that go into a remodel or rebuild.

At Smith Brothers Construction, we are happy to help you as you think through how to make your home into a lavish and luxurious environment.
