How to Celebrate Fall in Southern California

With clear skies, ocean breezes, and mild California temperatures, San Diego is a wonderful city to call home. San Diego residents can participate in a variety of year-round activities, but when fall rolls around, there are special events to help celebrate the season. Take a look at some great ways to get in the fall spirit.

Julian Apple Picking

What better way to welcome fall and the upcoming holidays than picking fresh apples for a homemade apple pie? From late August through October, you can visit Apple Starr Orchards and Calico Ranch for a fun-filled day of apple picking with the entire family. Julian, a quaint town located in East San Diego County, kicks off Julian Apple Days every year around September 24 and 25 at the Menghini Winery. The fall festival which runs for two days includes a beer and wine garden, great food, music and dancing, an antique tractor display, fun children’s games and activities, and of course, plenty of famous Julian apple pie.

Bates Nut Farm

Want to add some walnuts to that apple pie or bake a scrumptious pecan pie? Take a trip to Bates Nut Farm where you’ll find delicious nuts, dried fruits, candies, chocolates, and homemade fudge. This picturesque farm is the perfect place for leisurely strolls and outdoor fall picnics. From September 24 through October 31, you can visit the farm’s famous pumpkin patch and pick out that special pumpkin for Halloween with the kids. There are many family-friendly activities at Bates Nut Farm, as well as fresh BBQ, kettle corn, and live entertainment from noon to 3pm on weekends.

Wine Tasting in Temecula

Temecula is known for its great wineries and varied wines. During the fall in addition to their daily wine tastings, many wineries have special events to celebrate the season. For a relaxing day with beautiful scenery and outstanding wines, visit AutumnFest throughout the fall season in Temecula.

Dia De Los Muertos in Old Towndia de los meurtos

Every fall, Mexican culture is celebrated in Old Town’s State Historic Park with a giant Dia De Los Muertos party. This year, the festivities are scheduled for October 29-30, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. On November 2, Old Town San Diego will host activities throughout the park, including the traditional evening procession where participants can visit alters and leave gifts and prayers for loved ones who have entered the spiritual realm.

Viejas Ice Rink

To welcome fall weather in San Diego, take the family to the Viejas Ice Rink located in Alpine. It is Southern California’s largest outdoor ice rink and sure to be a highlight for the kids. The skating season begins on October 31 and ends the first week in January 2017.

The Haunted Trail at Balboa Park

To get in the spirit of Halloween, gather up the family and head to The Haunted Trail at Balboa Park. With a mile-long trail that winds through a grove of old twisted pines and oaks, it’s sure to keep you on guard for goblins and ghouls that may be lurking behind the trees. The Haunted Trail is open from September 30 through October 31. You can check out what new themes and rooms
are at The Haunted Hotel in the Gaslamp this year.

surfing santaSurfin’ Santa at Seaport Village

You can enjoy the spirit of fall in shorts and flip-flops at Surfin’ Santa. Santa is making his arrival in a special water craft at Seaport Village on November 28 between 1pm and 5pm. He will be posing for pictures with his surfboard, of course, so be sure to bring the kids.

There is something fun for everyone during the fall season in San Diego. You don’t even have to be a visitor to enjoy these activities — they’re just as enjoyable and encouraged for locals as well.
