Halloween Decor: Scream with Style!

The Smith Brother’s team loves Halloween! The holidays are such a fun time of year and our crew really does like to get into the spirit of the season. Yes, we’re designers and decor specialists with distinctive, and perhaps even persnickety tastes, but given the industry we work within, can you blame us? That doesn’t mean we don’t appreciate the scary-spooky-fun of all things Halloween such as haunted houses, decked out theme parks, and even spirited decorations that line the safe trick-or-treat neighborhoods. These are fun, but our tastes take our spooky sights to a different level of decor. If one were to ask our opinion on where to fall on the Halloween decorating spectrum we’d probably say less is more. With the exception of if you’re a Halloween enthusiast and plan to throw a ghoulishly marvelous masquerade ball, then that’s a whole different cauldron of worms – chances are you’re working with a fabulous decor crew to bring your night of fright to life!

Returning to Halloween decorating for those who love the holiday but prefer to keep their decor style fashionable, there are some ways to keep it simple and tasteful without going overboard. Even if you’re planning to entertain, there are some clever ways to give a hint of classy in a most hauntingly elegant way.

Here are 3 stylish Halloween decoration ideas to keep your grim style only slightly foreboding, but ever so inviting:

Incorporate the Color Scheme of Halloween

The colors of Halloween are quite beautiful — pumpkin orange tones, various shades of gray, deep blues and purples, and even bewitching black.  All of these colors can be tied into your home’s Halloween decorating. If you’re following the trends, you may even want to incorporate some of the recommended Pantone colors for fall 2015 such as Reflecting Pond (19-4326) or Amethyst Orchid (17-3628). The deep rich blue-hue of Reflecting Pond has an almost Edgar Allan Poe connotation to it and could be incorporated with the use of a candle, throw blanket, towels or even a painted skull. A pillow, rug, or even placemats in Amethyst Orchid would pair beautifully with a pumpkin tones and a dose of black or gray.

Find Your Halloween Decor Theme

The actual decorations really are the fun part, but we say leave the gore to the haunted house experts. Our best advice, pick a theme and stick with it as a mantra for decorative sense. If old-timey is your thing, think drippy candles in an antique candelabra, apothecary bottles with aged calligraphy tags, black lace, and old picture frames. If you fare on the simple and somewhat mid-century modern end of the spectrum, keep it simple with pops of color such as painted pumpkins with a chevron or polka dot pattern, and filament bulbs which give off an asylum effect dashed in with aged brass embellishments. If you prefer friendly ghost decor, think glittery pumpkins mixed with some that are perhaps painted a subdued matte white or black. Burlap canvas prints with fun little sayings from your favorite Halloween movie or poem, or even just words like “Boo!” or “Spooky” can be fun as well.
