In our last blog post, we discussed the different types of fireplaces: wood-burning, gas, electric, ethanol, and zero clearance. Today, we’re putting aside function, and focusing instead on form.
Read on to find out about our favorite fireplace aesthetics, all of which are sure to bring comfort, luxury, and year-round coziness to your custom dream home.
A traditional hearth fireplace utilizes a timeless design, and is the most common style of fireplace found. Always accompanying a wood-burning fireplace, the hearth—or the wall around and above the fireplace, as well as the ledge(s) that extends into the room to protect the home from burning wood—is usually made of brick or stone, but can feature more unique materials like cement or marble, too. Frequently, they even include intricate designs and beautiful mantles, thus truly highlighting the fireplace as the focal point of the home.
However, if you love the look of a hearth but don’t want the hassle of burning real wood, never fear! Hearths can also be found around other types of fireplaces, and mantles are staples in many homes. So if you’re going for a rustic feel, or simply want to capitalize on classic charm, a hearth fireplace is the perfect, time-tested option.
Interested in thinking a little more outside the box? Contemporary fireplaces—which tend to be gas burning—are free from the necessity of a hearth, and therefore come in an array of different designs.
One trend that we’ve been loving lately is the wall-mounted fireplace, a great option for anyone who doesn’t have enough space for a traditional hearth. With a wall mount, the fireplace doesn’t infringe on the room, and offers the same relaxing feel without adding any bulk. The placement is also flexible; you can even mount it beneath a television!
Another gorgeous contemporary design is the two-sided fireplace, which capitalizes on function by making the fireplace available in two separate spaces, simultaneously enhancing both of them. Another reason why two-sided fireplaces are great? They’re more economical than adding separate fireplaces in each room.

Fireplaces are best experienced in the traditional sense, but we know that having a working, wall-built fireplace is not an option for everyone, and that’s where tabletop fireplaces come in. Almost exclusively reserved for small, ethanol-burning structures, tabletop (and side table) fireplaces can be installed anywhere, and are a fun, unexpected choice if you have a tight space but don’t want to skimp on atmosphere. Tabletop fireplaces are usually lightweight, portable, and easy to move.
Never has your coffee table looked so luxurious!
And, finally, outdoor fireplaces—because fireplaces are not simply for the inside of your home. In warmer climates like California and Hawaii, outdoor fireplaces add a touch of coziness to an elegant patio, creating a sense of ambience as glamourous as a five-star resort.
Imagine the possibilities: a quant built-in bench surrounding the warm crackle of fire, or a lush dinner table opposite the bright, low-burning flames. Outdoor fireplaces have as much design potential as fireplaces installed throughout the interior, and are a simple way to transform a basic patio into a tranquil retreat.
As you begin considering fireplace possibilities, don’t worry—you don’t have to pick just one! You might even consider mixing and matching different styles, maximizing the warmth, and the beauty, of fireplaces throughout your space. Ultimately, the decision comes down to your wants and needs.
