6 Reasons to Attend San Francisco Design Week 2016
San Francisco Design Week brings thousands of architects, interior designers and innovative entrepreneurs from around the world to the Bay Area every year. With over 60 studio tours and 75 great events promoting design and architecture, high-tech inventions, and the latest fashion designs, this is an event you don’t want to miss. You can see the best in new designs and products and participate in informative events with world-renown architects, designers, and entrepreneurs that share valuable insight. This year’s SF Design Week is scheduled from June 2 – June 9, 2016.
Opening Reception – San Francisco Design Week 2016 kicks off with an opening reception on Thursday, June 2nd from 6 – 9 PM at 701 Mission Street in San Francisco. You can enjoy exhibits, activities, music and drinks while you mingle with some of the brightest and most creative minds in the design industry.
Although there is no shortage of inspiring lectures, tours, and events at San Francisco Design Week, here are six great events that you may want to attend:
10 Years MUUTO – June 1st, 6-10 PM @ Jules Maeght Gallery… 149 Gough Street
Join the Muuto event to celebrate 10 years of new perspectives on Scandinavian design. Muuto, meaning “new perspective” in Finnish, exemplifies the finest in traditional, Scandinavian design with focus on clean lines, simple functionality and expert craftsmanship with natural materials. The Muuto collection will be on display @ Jules Maeght Gallery from May 31st to June 4th.
Show and Tell with Materialist – June 3rd, 7-10 PM @ RN74… 301 Mission Street
Founded by Industrial Designer, Matt Grigsby, Materialist is an online marketplace for learning about and purchasing unique, sustainable materials. Architects and designers can gather accurate information and product availability to make important project decisions. There is a variety of innovative materials like recyclable fabrics, transparent aluminum, and peacock feather wallpaper.
Living in Color: Within Boundaries of Space – June 3rd, 6-11 PM @ 175 DeHaro Street
Sponsored by the LOCZIdesign group, this event is a fun, interesting exploration in art, technology and community lifestyles. As the winner of California Home + Design’s 2013 Room of the Year, and numerous Best of Houzz awards, LOCZIdesign has some of the most talented interior designers in the Bay Area, and you can join them for an inspiring evening.
Sketching San Francisco’s Past in the Present – June 6th, 2-5 PM @ Corner of 20th Street at Illinois
This a wonderful sketching tour that explores San Francisco’s history as an old port city compared to its new, upscale waterfront identity. You’ll have an opportunity to sketch three areas that highlight 19th-century artifacts in a 21st-century environment. Note: Dress in casual layers; wear comfortable walking shoes, and bring a lightweight sketch seat.
Rainwater Catchment in the Landscape – June 6th, 6:30-8 PM @ UC Berkeley Campus, SF… 160 Spear Street, Room 505
Sponsored by the UC Berkeley Landscape Architecture Program, this event discusses the benefits of rainwater catchment and different types of catchment systems like cisterns and infiltration basins. Hosted by Dan Carney, a landscape architect and water conservationist for Marin County, the lecture explores custom-built water conservation products that are used on projects for architects, builders, designers, and homeowners.
Happy Hour at Gershoni Creative Agency – June 7th, 4-7 PM @ 785 Market Street, 18th Floor
Gershoni, a full-service agency in the Bay Area, will host a tour of their design firm and an evening of wine and conversation. Located at the top of one of San Francisco‘s original skyscrapers, the Humboldt Bank Building, the evening promises to be one focused on great architecture and design within a beautiful architectural setting.
