4 Tips for Hiring the Right Interior Designer for YOU
Whether you’re remodeling your home, or perhaps even building a new one, you’re likely going to hire an interior designer to help you with the project. Getting started in your search of hiring the right interior designer to truly meet your needs can feel overwhelming at first. Here are four tips to help you get started:
1. Determine Your Top Priorities When Working With an Interior Designer
Creating a short list of questions to ask can be extremely helpful. Determine what your priorities are for the project to help guide your search. Having a good sense of what you want can help guide the process in not only finding the right interior designer, but it can also help drive the project in a proactive direction once you get started. A list of questions you might ask are:
- What is their availability? If you have a timeline in mind, can they meet it?
- Do they have a certain style they specialize in? Do they specialize in kitchens, bathrooms, or have they done it all?
- Do they work solo, with a contractor, or a design firm of some kind?
- What is their communication style? (this can help you get a feel for what the communication will be like)
- Can they provide me with a list of references and examples of their work?
- What is my estimated budget? Can they work with it?
2. Ask Around to See if Friends or Trusted Professional Resources Can Provide a Recommendation
One of the best places start looking for an interior designer is by asking friends and other trusted professionals who they might recommend for your project. If you’re already working with a trusted professional on a project, say a licensed contractor or an architect, chances are they can provide you with a credible interior design source. Some building companies can act as your one stop shop for everything from home construction to architecture, and even interior design and decor. The Smith Brothers team does this. However, it’s important to note that we’re very strategic about these relationships. Many of the professionals we work with in this realm are referral partners — some may have their own practice, but whether we’ve worked with them in-house or as an external contractor, we’ve developed a rapport, which means we trust their talents and the quality of their work. We collectively work as a team with these individuals, but in a cohesive fashion, ensuring the client is thoroughly communicated with throughout the life of the project.
3. Once You’ve Narrowed Down Potential Designers, Check Out Their Work
After you’ve gotten some solid referrals for interior designers, it’s time to check out their work. Websites are a great place to start, but keep in mind that not all of their best work may be displayed online. Make sure you ask to see a gallery of images that relate to the project you’re looking to have done. If you’re doing a kitchen remodel, for example, ask to see a gallery of kitchens they’ve worked on. Take note of their style. Are they versatile? Do they excel at contemporary, country style, or shabby chic? Do they have a lot of experience with a variety of styles?
4. Homework Time…On Your End!
As mentioned above, it helps to have a sense for what you want with an interior design project. Even if you don’t know exactly what that is, that’s okay, because that is what an interior design expert is there to help you with. However, you might have specific colors you like, items in your existing home that you can’t part with, or certain pieces that maybe even inspire you. Sometimes even things such as places you’ve traveled (or would like to travel) can offer inspiration to help guide the project. Every little bit helps, so grab photos of things you like, or even make a Pinterest board or collection on Houzz.com.
